CLASS OF 2024: Khia writes a new chapter for her future

12/09/2024

Khia Cranston, 23 from Wolverhampton, is writing a new chapter for her future by graduating from the University of Wolverhampton with a First Class degree in Creative and Professional Writing.

After studying for an Animal Management course at college, Khia wanted to pursue a new direction and, after losing her job during the Covid-19 pandemic, she applied to study on the Foundation degree in the University’s School of Social Science and Humanities.

She said: “I didn’t really have the right kind of qualifications to apply to university but I was able to secure a place on the Foundation degree programme.

“I’m the first in my family to go to university so I didn’t have any support or advice and guidance. I thought I would struggle at first but I didn’t really encounter any major problems. My lecturers and classmates have been very helpful and I’ve learnt stuff I never thought I would be learning.

“I’ve been active in writing my whole life and it’s something I had the highest grade in when I was at school and I wanted to study something that I enjoy and that I’m good at.

“It feels surreal. I never thought I’d be going to university and graduating, it wasn’t something I had planned to do.”

Khia has enjoyed exploring other writing avenues including Journalism and, whilst studying for the course, she found the confidence to review live music for a venue which is now published on their website.

Khia is about to start a Master’s degree in Screenwriting in Liverpool.
