CASE STUDY: 'Commuter student' Jodie Caller
Deciding to live at home and commute to University was an easy decision for Judo star Jodie Caller, who is shaping a career in Sports Coaching.
The 21-year-old British Judo player lives in Northampton and makes the hour-long commute to the Walsall Campus four times a week.
Having trained at the British Judo Centre of Excellence for two years and seen the sports facilities on campus, Jodie decided to apply to study a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching degree.
She says: “I decided to stay at home because my partner and family are at home in Northampton. I also work in Northampton when I’m not at University. It’s a little bit of a long commute, but it’s doable.”
Finances were also a consideration for second year student Jodie, who decided she could save the money she would have spent on accommodation fees towards a deposit for a house.
“I thought it would be best for me to not have that additional debt at the end of my time at University,” she says.
Jodie drives in for lectures twice a week, and a further twice a week for her Judo training commitments. But she says it is worth it as she is “loving” her course and is able to catch-up with friends on campus.
Jodie recently enjoyed medal success at the Antwerp Judo International Open in Belgium, winning a bronze medal.
