Scholarship prizes awarded to help students chase their motorsport dreams

05/09/2024

Three University of Wolverhampton students have been awarded scholarships to help support their studies and pursue their dreams of getting into Motorsport.

As part of the ‘Women in Engineering’ initiative, three scholarships have been donated by local solicitors FBC Manby Bowdler, who also sponsor the University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR) team.

Kayley Philpott, Alyce Mayo and Claire Berry, all studying Motorsport Engineering, have received scholarship prizes of between £500 and £1,000 and were recognised for their excellent achievements in their exams and commitment to their studies and extra-curricular activities throughout the academic year.

The initiative which has been running for more than five years is part of the University’s commitment to promoting women in science and engineering.

Reflecting on the scholarship prize, Kayley said: “I’m really pleased to have been awarded the scholarship and the prize money will help me get to tracks where UWR will be racing but also help with funding equipment I need during my studies.

“For anyone who is interested in studying Motorsport Engineering, you’ll be able to get involved with multiple race teams at UWR alongside your studies and gain valuable skills which future employers may look for.”

Alyce said: “It feels amazing knowing I have the backing of the University going into my final year of studies and being able to use the money to get the experience I need to get into other race teams.”

Neil Lloyd, Managing Partner at FBC Manby Bowdler, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with UWR having sponsored the team for nine years. Providing  scholarships  is our way of giving back to the manufacturing sector and trying to make a difference.

“We’re delighted that once again our firm are providing scholarships for female engineering students studying Motorsport Engineering.”

Shane Kelly, Racing Driver and Team Manager at UWR, said: “It was a difficult decision to select which students would receive the scholarship prizes. We’ve seen so many incredible women come through our race teams and FBC have played their part in helping many of them get valuable experience in the Motorsport industry.

“Over the last few years, we’ve seen young women pave their way into Formula One and in lower Formula. Race teams bring the best out of young engineers and at UWR, everyone gets a chance to work on our race cars giving them a chance of a career in Motorsport.”

The University offers a variety of degrees including Motorsport, Automotive, Mechatronics, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University's Telford Campus based in Priorslee and at its City Campus in Wolverhampton.
