Introduction to the Online Mentor Update
(Please be aware this information only now applies to programmes on the 2008 SLAIP standards (NMC, 2008). This below preparation routes can only used if supporting students on programmes where the 2008 still apply, please check with the programme team if you have any queries).
Welcome to the online mentor update pages. The online mentor update can only be completed by mentors who are on the local mentor register (see section below Maintaining Mentor Competence) and have previously completed a recognised mentor preparation course. If you are unsure whether this applies to you, please contact your Trust/Organisation education lead or the External Partnerships team FEHWexternalpartnerships@wlv.ac.uk or 01902 518630. If contacting the External Partnerships team, the staff will refer your call onto the relevant member of academic staff.
Guidance for completing this update:
You are required to work through each of the sections, listed below, to update your knowledge regarding the requirements of a mentor/sign-off mentor. You should complete the scenarios and test your understanding of each section through the questions provided. You can print off information as you work through the materials and collate information for your professional practice portfolio, if you wish to do so. Once you are satisfied that you have updated your knowledge relating to student assessment and have considered the practice assessment scenarios you should complete the self-declaration form and return it to FEHWexternalpartnerships@wlv.ac.uk so that your update date can be recorded on the relevant live mentor register.

The information contained in this online update will enable you to meet the NMC Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAiP) (2008) supporting your continuation in your role as a mentor.

Each placement area is supported by an academic member of staff and in most cases a clinical placement facilitator/practice placement manager. These individuals will be happy to support you with any aspect of this online mentor update.
