NMC Approved Programmes - Mentoring and Supporting Students

Welcome to your Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor resource for health professionals, registered nurses and midwives who support learners in practice. It is comprehensive but not exhaustive. There are signposts throughout to further reading or study. From August 2019 the way student nurses, midwives and student nursing associates are supported and assessed in practice is currently going through a transition period to meet the new NMC Standards for student supervision and assessment (NMC, 2018). Mentor updates will become a transitional workshop from August 2019 to meet these new standards and also incorporate the existing standards. These will transition current mentors and sign off mentors to meet the new roles of Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor.

Practice supervisor is a registered health care professional (nurse, midwife, allied health professional, registered nursing associate) or other, who works with the student enabling their learning and provides feedback and evidence of the student’s attainment and development to their designated assessor.

Practice assessor is a Registered Nurse/Midwife or Nursing Associate on the same part of the NMC register as the student they are designated to assess. They are required to complete the student’s assessment process and together with the designated academic assessor make decisions about the student’s proficiency and progression from one stage of the programme to the next (at the end of the year). A Practice Assessor is normally designated for each placement experience or the whole year.

Preparation to transition from mentor to practice supervisor/assessor roles will be generally delivered within your organisation by PPM leads/learning and development and advertised within your workplace. For PVI organisations you can access transitional workshops through your practice leads.

If you have an queries please contact either your Practice Leads or our Deputy Head of Practice IoH Sarah Shaw.
