Mental Health Nursing at Telford Campus Placement Information

You will have the opportunity to train in a variety of placement types and locations. Broadly speaking, placements work on a “hub and spoke” model.  You will have a “home” Trust and you are likely to be placed with them for the majority of your placement hours. You will also have placements which may be with PVI (private, voluntary, or independent) providers or another Trust. Before confirming your course choice you should consider if another campus location might be better for you. You will need to be able to make your own way to your placements, to be on shift at the times the area normally works. Many placement areas operate 24/7 shift patterns. You should consider how you will get to placements and back home, including if you have early or late placement patterns. You need to plan to be able to travel to a wide range of potential placements, across the whole of the West Midlands and Staffordshire, not just the hospital sites of the Trust.

You must complete at least 2300 hours in clinical placements during your course. You will be in placement up to 40 hours per week during your placement blocks. Once you have accepted a place on a particular training site (Telford) it is unlikely you would be able to change your training base as it depends upon there being space at the other site. It is therefore important that you check that the locations given as part of your offer are correct- this will be on the offer letter. If it is not correct or you cannot see it, you should not accept the offer and contact Admissions straight away to see if there is availability for the training site that you require. We would advise that if there are no spaces available you wait for the next available intake rather than choosing a training site where you will struggle with the travelling.

Theoretical studies will take place at Telford Campus and the majority of your clinical placements are likely to be with Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust who operate within and around Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Shropshire, and Telford & Wrekin. They also deliver services including sexual health services and drug & alcohol services and in prisons. Placements will also be with PVI (Private, Voluntary, and Independent) providers across the whole of the West Midlands. This geographical area is the biggest placement area we have. It is very difficult to travel to some areas that the Trust covers as it is very rural. Public transport is very limited and does not cover all placement locations- nonetheless, you will be expected to make your way to your placements, to be on shift at the times the area normally works.
