Legal Companions Mckenzie Friends Service

At the University of Wolverhampton we recognise that cuts to legal funding have resulted in many people representing themselves in court. If you are a Litigant in Person who could use some additional support in court, you may benefit from the use of the McKenzie Friend service provided by our Law student volunteers who can accompany you in court.

What is a Mckenzie Friend?

A Mckenzie Friend is a Law student volunteer who provides assistance to litigants in person by accompanying them in court. Our volunteers will be able to;

  • Provide moral support
  • Take notes for you during proceedings
  • Help with any points of law or procedure that may be unclear
  • Suggest any questions you may wish to ask

Please be aware that they cannot provide legal advice, act on your behalf or address the court. They are there to play a supportive role throughout proceedings only.

How does this service work?

If you would like to use this free service, please complete the required form and a member of the team will inform you if a McKenzie Friend has been allocated to you.

On the day of your hearing attend court as normal and a McKenzie Friend will meet you there.

Wolverhampton Legal Companions are University of Wolverhampton student volunteers, affiliated to the CLOCK scheme, the national legal companions scheme.
