From Dog Reels to Digital Marketing: My Journey as a Marketing Management Student

Kyren Aulakh, first year Marketing Management student shares how she went from creating Instagram reels to studying Marketing.

My name is Kyren, and I am a first-year student studying Marketing Management at the University of Wolverhampton Business School. My journey towards this degree was not a straightforward one. During my sixth form studies, I was unsure about what career I wanted to pursue. However, I noticed that I was excelling in digital media, thanks to my teacher, Miss Brookes. I decided to create an Instagram account for my dog, Lucy, and started creating reels and posts. To my surprise, my reels and posts gained a lot of traction and led me to think about my future career.

Although I wasn't initially keen on going to University, I decided to apply and am glad I did. The modules I have taken so far in my first year have expanded my knowledge of marketing and allowed me to complete various courses that can be included on my CV. I have particularly enjoyed the Website Development and Design module, which has allowed me to create my own website and think about what I want to do after completing my course.

In addition, the Branding and Advertising module has given me a better understanding of how effective advertising can be in making a business or brand successful. I am currently working with Wolverhampton Homes, a housing association that manages over 21,000 properties in Wolverhampton, to gain real-life experience in the field, I working in a team to create a video advertisement to support their Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity strategy.

Both of my modules have allowed me to express my creativity and think about how I can utilise my skills in the future. The experience of creating reels and posts for Lucy's account has taught me to think about current trends and how they can be used to engage my target audience. This skill will be invaluable in my future marketing career.

In conclusion, my journey towards becoming a Marketing Management student has been an exciting and unconventional one. It has taught me that it is okay to stand out from the crowd and be myself. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in this field and am excited about what the future holds.
