Andy Newell is an award-winning documentary style photographer and artist working in digital media. His current practice is documenting the life of the Wolverhampton School of Art, and everything connected with it’s iconic brutalist building. A focus of this work is exposing the highs and lows of education in art and design throughout the UK.

His influences come from photographers like Eugine Smith especially his ‘Minamata’ and work for Life magazine like ‘Country Doctor’. The powerful narrative that runs through all Smith’s work sets a benchmark for all documentary photographers to aspire to.

Andys current project of creating images on concrete, the same material as the iconic School of Art has enabled him to experiment with many non-photographic methods to produce work in an exciting and innovative way.

Andy is also working with a local allotments project exploring the multicultural diversity of a traditional environment in the modern world.
