Vicky Crowther

"Vicky is a digital illustrator who applies print and traditional methods of illustration in her practice which she has developed by engaging with a effervescent artist community. She currently works at the Wolverhampton Makers Dozen Artist Studios where she spends her time drawing, printing and creating works to sell independently under her shop name VickyLizCrazy. While studying she has been commissioned several times. First by the University Nursing course to create an illustration highlighting the tolls placement year can have on students mental health. Through this project Vicky began to develop her personal style and later applied this style in narrative works completed through her degree. Since then she has created murals for the Arena Theatre, installed in the Mander Centre, a solo mural in the City Campus Library and finally will be co-leading a team to paint the Student Union over the summer. "

Through my years at University it is safe to say I have dedicated every second developing my visual language and finding a passion for creating children’s narrative illustrations and large scale mural paintings. I enjoy making the city just a little bit more happy and colourful one mural at a time.

I love spending time learning about mythology and reading poetry, particularly about love, death and anything with a gothic undertone. I recently have been exploring poems by Edgar Alan Poe and illustrating them through block printing, a technique of illustration I became very passionate about during my time at University. I particularly enjoy taking narratives of a gothic theme and making them fun and colourful for all ages to enjoy while still maintaining a spooky atmosphere. Something I pride myself on is my versatile practice, I have my preferred style but as an illustrator who has worked for multiple clients with different interests I understand that not everyone likes the same thing, I consider my skills to be adaptable to suit what the client is after to ensure I deliver the best possible work to suit the project in hand and will work closely with them through the development process so they are satisfied with the outcome.

I also enjoy theatre design and dedicated my major project in my final year to learning the methods and techniques for designing a stage design for a fictional production of Lemony Snickets a Series of Unfortunate Events. I created a series of sketches and designs in addition to a hand rendered diorama showcasing the creation of this design.

My passion for being involved with the creative community has led to some amazing opportunities for me, I’ve participated in craft fairs, led workshops and this summer will be attending the Same Difference Festival at West Park teaching a workshop on expressing individuality through art and in addition to this will be working with the Wolverhampton Art Gallery through the summer teaching workshops about interactive art. It is this support network that have given me the confidence to find my way as a freelance illustrator and through this gain credibility as an artist leading to some exciting projects such as co-leading the re-design of the Student Union over the summer where I will design three out of six murals and co-lead a team to paint them over the summer. I hope this is something that will continue on in my career.

In the future I hope to travel more, painting murals as I go, and making the world a bit more colourful and happy. I hope to illustrate more narratives and continue to refine my practice and its thanks to the friends and family I surround myself with that I have the confidence to chase my goals, I know I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it including learning new skills and developing my visual language as an illustrator.
