Rose Thomas

"Wolverhampton-based artist, Rose Thomas, has been experimenting with colour, scale, and surface for the past few years. Originally a very traditional abstract painter, Rose blended the one-dimensional aspect of a canvas with the space that exists around the work. Rose’s evolution into the expanded field allowed her to experiment with the surface a lot more and that became the primary focus of her work. Layering multiple paintings with different surfaces and depths achieved a sculpturesque view of the painting. Despite using multiple surfaces she consistently used oil paint as her main medium. This ties all of the separate pieces into one coherent work. "

The purpose of Rose Thomas’ artwork is to create a painting that is more than a canvas on a white wall. She thinks of her paintings as an environment that she can make. It starts as a simple clean space which she then completely ruins with paint, tape, and a mass of failed experiments. Her work in ways are inspired by the traditional but her work is expanded in ways where she can be free with the choice of medium and surface.

As an artist she wants her work to reflect the process she went through to create it. Rose’s work depicts her studio space; as a complete and utter mess, she can navigate through. Every time she tries to keep her surroundings clean there ends up being more paint on the floor than the actual canvas. She struggled a lot with trying to create these large-scale abstract paintings which were very much in-the-moment process while worrying about the cleanup of the paint afterwards. Rose Thomas is a messy painter and the amount of time she took trying to clean up was such a waste especially now that ‘the mess’ is such an important foundation for her paintings.
