Jan Norton

"Having been a part-time Fine Art student for six years, Jan has enjoyed creating original work with a focus on materiality. She particularly enjoys working with different materials and finding new ways of working, learning by doing. She has enjoyed researching analysis and identifying themes in art and in writing about art. Her particular interests are the work of women artists. She has also delivered a variety of community-based creative workshops and enjoys making opportunities available to people who wouldn't normally access the arts."

Jan creates work which is personal or political, using everyday materials and simple techniques. She draws inspiration from artists, such as Louise Bourgeios, Mona Hatoum and Anselm Kiefer. Using industrial felt, she creates abstract sculptures which represent the body. Her paintings in ash reflect her musings on loss and grief. Her hair sculpture felted itself.
