Isabelle Llewellyn

"I am a contemporary abstract painter based in the West Midlands, England. I find inspiration from Bridget Riley, a highly influential abstract painter in the 1960’s Op Art movement; Vanessa Jackson, a painter and installation wall painter whose focus is on creating three-dimensional spaces using geometry; and Tomma Abts, a visual artist whose geometrical forms are built up from layers of acrylic and oil paint. Previously, my work has been exhibited in Wolverhampton’s Mander Centre Community Hub (2022), The Purple Cube in Wolverhampton’s School of Art (2022-2023) and Wolverhampton’s School of Art Bessant Gallery (2022-2023)."

Working predominantly in oil and acrylic paint, Isabelle explores themes of abstraction in artificial space and depth using bold colours.

Her interests in art revolve around the way in which colours and shapes are manipulated to create illusions of space and depth on a flat surface. Currently, Isabelle’s work investigates how tones of colour layered in stripes trick the eye into believing that the painting has curved out of the supposedly flat surface, almost appearing to be like a protruding object attempting to hide under folds of fabric.

Rather than relying on a central fix point in her work, the viewer is encouraged to move around the piece to fully experience the paintings and understand the space they occupy. Rather than lingering on one fixed position, the eye is lead across the canvases by the flowing lines.
