Emily Grant

"Emily Grant (she/her) is a British artist, currently based in West Midlands. She began exploring childhood and family after lockdown, finding herself studying her family album and reminiscing on childhood memories. Her technique is inspired by Caroline Walker, who has adopted painterly strokes within her work. She has previously participated in group exhibitions, including the Mander Community Hub (Wolverhampton) in 2022, and the Purple Cube and Long Gallery (University of Wolverhampton) during 2022/23. She was nominated for Freelands Painting Prize 2023. Currently, she is studying at the University of Wolverhampton, where she is experimenting and developing her ideas and creative practice."

Typically working with oil on canvas, Emily Grant explores childhood, family, and contemporary domestic spaces. She aims to convey the feeling of nostalgia and evoke reflection on past memories.

By omitting facial expressions, body language becomes emphasised, relied on to express the relationship between the subjects and the domestic spaces they inhabit. In doing so, the viewer is able to apply and reflect on their own memories with their internal languages.

She is influenced by artists and photographers such as Caroline Walker, Nick Waplington and Sonia Boyce, where the compositions display close relationships and familiarity within a domestic setting. Her personal memories also influence her, as well as the family album, her source of reference material taken in moments of spontaneity and highlight the authenticity of childhood.
