University of Wolverhampton alumna and honorary graduate Fatou Baldeh MBE has been recognised as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2025. This prestigious accolade celebrates Fatou’s dedication and impactful work in the global fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Fatou, who studied BSc (Hons) Psychology and Health Studies at the Wolverhampton City Campus between 2005-2009, has become a leading voice in advocating for the rights and safety of women and girls. Her tireless efforts, particularly in her native Gambia, have been instrumental in challenging harmful traditional practices and advocating for stronger legal protections.
This significant recognition in the TIME 100 list comes at a critical juncture, following significant advocacy work by Fatou and her colleagues. Reflecting on her recent efforts and the challenges faced, Fatou shared with TIME Magazine: “It was a victory for Gambia, but also the world at large. She had feared that overturning the ban in Gambia would have a ripple effect, potentially leading to other countries backsliding on outlawing FGM. “It’s been a difficult year, I have to admit, but it’s also opened up the space ... for more conversations around the issue,” Fatou says. “I think what happened in the Gambia has really awakened people [to] the need to do more about this.”
David Wedge, Head of Alumni Relations commented on Fatou’s remarkable achievement: “This latest accolade recognises what an inspirational leader Fatou is and the global impact that her work continues to have. She is a change-maker, and we are incredibly proud of her and that she is alumna of ours”.
Earlier this year, Fatou was also recognised as one of TIME Magazine's Women of the Year, further highlighting her significant global impact.
