Midlands Air Ambulance Charity Delivers Successful Simulation Training Exercise

26/07/2024

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, in collaboration with RAF Museum Midlands, University of Wolverhampton and West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, proudly delivered a comprehensive simulation training exercise recently.

The event, which was held at the RAF Museum Midlands, aimed to enhance emergency response capabilities, and foster collaborative learning among clinicians, university students, and RAF Museum personnel.

The training exercise featured realistic emergency scenarios designed to test and improve the skills of participants in handling critical situations. Attendees included critical care paramedics and pre-hospital emergency medicine doctors from Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, student paramedics from the University of Wolverhampton, West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics and RAF Museum visitor experience staff.

The simulation course included:

  • Assessment of incident need and casualty triage and treatment.
  • Communication between responders, first aiders, the ambulance service, and Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.
  • Control of incident scenes, the ‘casualties’ and bystanders.
  • Coordination of responders and assets.

Emily Browne, head of education and training at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: "Our primary goal with this training exercise was to provide an immersive and educational experience that allows participants to refine their skills in a controlled environment. The collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton, West Midlands Ambulance Service and RAF Museum Midlands has been invaluable in making this event a success."

Student paramedics from the University of Wolverhampton had the opportunity to practice their hands-on skills and respond to complex patient scenarios. They worked alongside critical care teams, gaining a deeper understanding of the vital role Midlands Air Ambulance Charity plays in the care of critically ill patients.

Beth Potter, a student paramedic at the University commented the event was “very well organised” and the “team were very friendly, approachable and helpful.”

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service voluntarily gave up their time to practice critical skills and collaborate with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

RAF Museum Midlands provided a unique setting for the exercise. Alan Edwards, head of operations for the RAF Museum Midlands added: “Hosting this event at the RAF Museum has allowed us to give our teams the opportunity to practice key first aid skills as well as ensuring our processes are safe and effective. The knowledge and skills exchanged on the day will undoubtedly benefit all parties involved."

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity remains committed to enhancing pre-hospital emergency care and will continue to seek partnerships that further this mission. The success of this training exercise underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in planning and improving emergency response and patient outcomes.
