Local photographer in the frame for Honorary Award

The University of Wolverhampton has awarded one of its talented graduates an Honorary Doctor of Arts.
Denise Maxwell is an alumna of the University, growing up locally in Walsall. She is now the multi genre international Photographer behind Lensi Photography, covering themes such as sports, fashion, events, portraits and photojournalism, workshops and mentoring.
Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise.
Denise has photographed some of the most well-known people in the world including, Kanye West, Stormzy, Barack Obama and Usain Bolt as well as covering events such as the BAFTAs, London Fashion Week and the Brit Awards and she was an official photographer for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
She was one of seven female documentary photographers to be highlighted by the BBC during lockdown. She has had exhibitions featured in The Guardian, The Independent and the Metro newspapers and has appeared in OK Magazine. She was one of 15 female photographers chosen to be exhibited by F22 of The Association of Photographers and the award-winning photographer behind the Starling Bank “Make Money Equal” Campaign.
Alongside creating imagery for clients including Uber, Google, Government Departments, Gumtree and the BBC, Denise continues to speak across the UK sharing her knowledge and experience of over 13 years in the field, specialising in teaching photographers how to set up multiple streams of income.
Denise said: “I’m really, really happy to have been awarded an Honorary Degree today. All of my family have graduated from the University of Wolverhampton, including my husband, so I have lots of links with Wolverhampton.
“Even though I studied Women’s Studies and Social Policy, my degree has led me somewhere completely different. I had always been interested in photography, was always that friend taking pictures, and I wondered if I could make a career out of it.
“And now my career has just got to places that I’d never imagined. Studying for a degree can lead to lots of different things and your career can lead to anywhere.”
The University’s graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Thursday 14 September to Friday 22 September 2023.
