VIDEO: Am I a woman or a slave? The formidable layers of Mary Prince

22/06/2023

A new video has been released by the University of Wolverhampton's School of Humanities supported by the Centre for Transnational and Transcultural Research (CTTR) detailing the launch of a website about research into ex-slave, Mary Prince.

On 6 March, 2023, the School of Humanities hosted a unique event during which PhD researcher, Ifemu Omari, launched her website about the ex-slave Mary Prince (1788 - unknown).

Prince's extraordinary autobiography - The History of Mary Prince, A West Indian Slave (1831) - is the first slave narrative to have been published by a black woman in Britain.

The event also saw the premiere of “Am I a Woman or A Slave?”, a dance interpretation of Prince’s story of resilience, migration and identity - themes which are as significant in today’s Britain as they were in the 1830s.

Ifemu recently won two prestigious prizes from literary associations, highlighting the importance of her PhD research into the slave trade.

To find out more about the research check out this story on the website.
