University business degrees receive exciting overhaul
Following an extensive review, all of the undergraduate business courses at the University of Wolverhampton Business School have been redesigned to provide a unique experience that will better prepare students for the competitive graduate market.
The changes will come into place from September 2021 and follow an extensive consultation process with businesses, professional bodies and students.
At the core of the courses and the School’s vision are four pillars, which represent the issues which businesses currently face: Sustainability; Responsibility and Professionalism; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and Digital and Analytics.
Professor Clare Schofield, Director of the University of Wolverhampton Business School said: “The revalidation puts blended learning at the heart of the Business School teaching, and we have embedded opportunities for applied and enterprise learning in all modules, at all levels.
“Blended learning hasn’t always received the best publicity during the pandemic due to the great levels of uncertainty and change that we have all been experiencing.
“However, moving forward it will provide a wealth of opportunities opposed to purely on-campus teaching, including the ability to study some sections of learning at a time and place that best suits our students and also the ability to do virtual work experience with global brands to boost CVs, which wouldn’t otherwise be possible.”
Instead of the traditional short modules focusing on a singular aspect of business, such as human resources, accounting, or marketing, the redesigned modules are larger (worth 30 credits each) and so have enabled the course team to develop a curriculum that is more focused on employability and organises study in to themes.
Associate Director of the Business School, Sarah Williams added: “Thematic modules enable staff to bring discipline areas together more effectively to explore issues relevant to business; for example, the module ‘The Responsible Business’ will bring together supply chain, governance, management, leadership, marketing and accounting to explore what responsibility means in practice.
“This provides an opportunity for students to explore the interdependences of different business functions of an organisation and understand through business cases the true essence of how real businesses run.
“Furthermore, enterprise and employability are at the heart of this practice-focused business management programme which aims to develop students into work-ready graduates or entrepreneurs.”
Another key benefit for students is that they will have more time to fully explore each module area, with only two modules per semester for full-time study and one module per semester for part-time study.
