The University of Wolverhampton Law School runs a number of initiatives which aim to give students valuable real-life experience but also support the local community.

In recognition of this, the University has been shortlisted as Wolverhampton Law Society’s 2019 Community Champion of the Year.

One of the successful projects is the Legal Advice Centre on the ground floor of the Mander Shopping Centre in Wolverhampton. Students are supervised by local solicitors and lecturers to provide free advice to members of the public on issues such as employment law, contractual disputes, negligence claims and business law.

Other community initiatives include the Wolverhampton Legal Companions scheme, run in collaboration with Wolverhampton County Court, and the Law Student Representation Project which enables students to volunteer with the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Welfare Rights Service.

Head of the University of Wolverhampton Law School, Sukhninder Panesar, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Community Champion Award. The nomination and shortlisting is testament to the excellent work that our staff and students do in the community.  The Law School has a significant presence in the community through a number of projects and it continues to build strong relations with the providers of legal services as well as those citizens in need of legal advice.”

The winners will be announced in front of around 200 local lawyers and legal professionals at the Law Society’s Annual Dinner on Friday, 22 November 2019.
