Workshop highlights how to make clothes in a sustainable fashion
The Wolverhampton School of Art is holding a free workshop in its Fashion Lab to highlight the issue of sustainable fashion. The ‘S4S Stitched Up!’ workshop is taking place on Saturday 30th March 2019 from 10.00 am until 4.30 pm and will include talks and workshops as well as the opening of an exhibition about action for sustainable fashion. The workshop is taking place in the George Wallis Building at the University of Wolverhampton’s City Campus. It will include how to start up a sustainable clothing enterprise, techniques for upcycling and mending and working with reclaimed and recycled materials.
S4S Stitched Up! is part of the Designing a Sensibility for Sustainable Clothing Research (S4S) project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and is a partnership between the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Exeter, with community partners in the West Midlands including The Hive in Shrewsbury, Black Country Living Museum, R&A Collaborations, Antiform Ltd. and Fashion Revolution.
Fiona Hackney, Professor in Fashion, Textiles and Theories at the University, said: “The workshop will be of interest to anyone who enjoys making clothes in a more sustainable fashion.
“We are bringing together artists, researchers and entrepreneurs and everyone who wears clothes to explore how to be sustainable clothing citizens.
“We hope that this project will help us understand more about how collective approaches to learning through making might build a sensibility for sustainability that will change attitudes and behaviours about our everyday clothing choices and practices.”
The event is free to attend, but members of the public should book via eventbrite as only a limited number of tickets are available. Lunch will be provided. Find out more about the research project on the website, Twitter@S4sSensibility, Instagram@s4s_sensibility, Facebook and YouTube.
