House of Lords event celebrates research excellence
Life-enhancing research by experts at the University of Wolverhampton has been showcased at a prestigious event at the House of Lords in London.
The latest developments in cyber security, cancer treatments and bioplastics were among the projects celebrated at an event hosted by the University’s Chancellor, Lord Paul of Marylebone, PC.
The event was themed around the University’s work in health, community, sustainability and cyber and brought together leading researchers with key partners and stakeholders to highlight success stories.

Exhibitions, demonstrations and a sustainable fashion show were hosted as part of the event in a grand room and terrace overlooking the Thames on Thursday, 18 July 2019.
Also on display was research into religious and cultural identities, snake venom, developments in cyberpsychology and ‘Snidge Scrumpin’, a study focused on memories and what the Black Country smells like.
Professor Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor, said: “Our research is transforming people’s lives and the world we live in today.
“We have experts seeking to find a use for waste plastic, investigating ways to protect people’s data from cyber attacks and working at the cutting edge of cancer treatment. Just this week, our mathematicians were ranked number one in the world in the renowned Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects for research impact in the area of cybermetrics. Our research is world-leading and life-enhancing, and has the power to make a real difference to our communities and the world around us.
“The House of Lords event provided a great occasion to celebrate the amazing and diverse research that is taking place at the University of Wolverhampton every day.”
Professor Silke Machold, Dean of Research at the University, said: “The research areas showcased at the House of Lords make a real impact on real lives.
“Our researchers were on hand to talk to guests including business and education experts, Members of Parliament and dignitaries about how their work is helping to make a difference.”
This was the sixth time the University of Wolverhampton has hosted an event at the House of Lords, with last year’s event celebrating degree apprenticeships and lifelong learning.
