Keen cyclists Tom Hicks and Gary O’Dea, both from the Department of Learning and Information Services, presented £2,160 to Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge. The pair cycled from Wolverhampton to London over three days in April of this year.
The colleagues decided to raise funds for Mary Stevens Hospice as Tom’s father-in-law Roger Brookes spent his last days receiving care there. Tom said: “The care and support given to both Roger and his family was truly awe-inspiring. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of their work is that the Hospice relies mainly on fundraising to remain open.”
Tom, from Kingswinford, and Gary, from Tipton, had considerable support from the University and Tipton Town Football Club, who have made a generous donation of £400.
Janet Jones, Head of Fundraising at Mary Stevens Hospice, said: “These guys are amazing, their tales of the journey were quite amusing to read in parts and I have great admiration for both of them for not only undertaking the challenge but for organising the trip as well. The money they have raised will enable us to continue our ongoing care and support for our patients with life-limiting illness.”
Mary Stevens Hospice needs £2.2 million a year to remain fully operational and support those who use its service when nearing the end of their lives.
