Are you registered to vote?

The UK General Election is to be held on Thursday 4 July. Polling booths will be open between 7am and 10pm. 

96% of over 65 year olds are registered to vote. 1 in 3 young people are not.  Make sure you have your say in the General Election! 

To vote at the UK general election on 4 July, you must be registered to vote and:

  • 18 years of age or over on polling day
  • be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
  • be resident at an address in the UK (or a UK citizen living abroad who has previously been registered to vote in the UK or has lived in the UK)
  • not be legally excluded from voting.

EU citizens cannot vote in the UK general election.

Register to vote

  • If you wish to register to vote you must do so by Tuesday 18 June, by 11.59pm.
  • If you wish to apply for a postal vote you must do so by Wednesday 19 June, by 5pm.
  • If you wish to apply for a proxy vote you must do so by Wednesday 26 June, by 5pm.
  • In order to vote in person everyone now needs photo ID. Student cards are not accepted ID for in person voting, but you can find out what ID is accepted here.

Apply for a voter ID 

If you do not possess an accepted form of photo ID, you can apply for one using the link on the electoral commission page, or via the NUS page, where Citizen cards are being issued free: https://www.nus.org.uk/.

  • The deadline for applying for a Voter ID is Wednesday 26 June at 5pm.
