Joint statement about online racism

At the University of Wolverhampton, we strongly condemn all forms of discrimination and are appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at England players on social media. We fully support their tremendous efforts throughout the Euro 2020 campaign, which has been a real highlight of recent months.

Racism has no place in sport or our society, and as an organisation, we support and stand with the diverse student and staff community we serve. The University is committed to combating all forms of racism, and we urge any students or staff to report incidents to us through our online Incident Reporting form or by emailing: equality@wlv.ac.uk.

We understand that you will feel upset by some of the comments shared on social media and in the news, and if it would help to speak to someone, you may wish to access one of the University’s support services.

Everyone at the University of Wolverhampton has access to Togetherall, a 24/7 online mental health and wellbeing support portal. Whether you feel low or need a place to talk, Togetherall can help you explore your feelings in a safe and supportive online environment.

Students can also visit the Student Support and Wellbeing webpages for information about other support available. Members of staff can access the Staff Wellbeing Hub.

As an inclusive organisation, we will continue to collaborate and proactively address racism to ensure long-term change by educating ourselves and working with our communities to educate themselves on racial injustice. Through our work on the Race Equality Charter (REC), we are working with staff and students to create a culture that challenges racist attitudes and behaviour wherever they are encountered, as part of our wider work to show zero tolerance towards bullying, discrimination and harassment.

Thank you, and stay safe.

Angel Morphew, Students’ Union Vice-President Diversity
