Programme

For Law students only.

Successful applicants will take part in a varied programme inspired by the Saint Lucian legal system which has evolved directly from the British legal system.

The programme has two phases which are intertwined across the 4 week experience.

In phase one of the programme students will spend time familiarising themselves with the Saint Lucian legal system, how it works and the impact it has on the nation. This brings a wide range of experiences such as meeting with the island’s leading lawyers, politics and site visits to broaden understanding and give context for example to charities, communities, parliament and the courts.

Phase two of the programme evolves into more practical work. This is where Caribbean Elective wants to harness the law to do good. Your work could be varied and include time spent helping policymakers make amendments to the law or create new policies which will improve the lives of local people. Or perhaps you will use your skills to help provide legal aid advice to domestic abuse victims or marginalised groups.

Overall, a powerful and exciting opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone and add unique work experience to your CV.

This programme is open to all but is particularly Ideal if you are studying Medicine, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing etc.

The Mental Healthcare system in Saint Lucia is extremely challenged and under-resourced. Understanding across the island is also extremely low and there is a vital and urgent need for more support. Caribbean Elective believes that although we cannot be the whole solution we certainly can play our part to help.

So, every year, Caribbean Elective gathers a group of talented and passionate students to work across communities and alongside marginalised groups. Including young offenders, homeless shelters, schools, community groups and LGBTQIA+ groups. Under the guidance of your local mentor, you will work with other students to visit a wide range of locations, you will spend some time familiarising yourself with the challenge before working to design and deliver workshops across communities.

It’s an eye-opening, challenging, yet extremely rewarding programme that will enable you to meet some truly amazing and kind people and healthcare professionals.

Open to all students of all types!

Caribbean Elective’s Business and Enterprise program gives you the chance to dive into the Caribbean's vibrant business landscape.

You'll visit a range of local businesses, from small start-ups to larger companies, to see how they operate and learn about the local economy. You will be able to see the vital role that tourism and agriculture play in the Saint Lucian economy and how communities rely on it.

You’ll also explore how politics impacts business by meeting with local politicians and those who work with them.

It’s a hands-on experience that will give you fresh insights into global business, politics and how both shape economic development in the Caribbean.

Open to all!

Caribbean Elective’s Politics program offers an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the dynamic world of Caribbean politics. Over four weeks, you'll work closely under the guidance of Dominic Fedee, former Minister of Tourism and current Senator in St. Lucia, gaining first-hand experience in how political decisions are made and executed.

You’ll meet key politicians, civil servants, and people from developing communities whose lives are shaped by political decisions. By the end of the programme, you will use your newfound understanding of communities and challenges to help design new policy ideas for how to improve society, livelihoods and opportunity in Saint Lucia. The politics programme represents and unique opportunity to access the political world and gain hands-on experience unlike any other!
