BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with Foundation Year

The aim of this module is to ensure that the student has the underpinning knowledge of pathology, epidemiology, public health medicine, pharmacology and the psychosocial dimensions of health to provide the foundations for study in the Life Sciences division of healthcare science.

Biomedical Science is a practical subject. Success in many later modules relies on your ability in the scientific and practical skills of biomedical science. You will develop and enhance your skills through a series of lectures, workshops, practical classes and self-directed activities. From this module you will develop the scientific, practical and academic skills to enable successful study in practically-based biomedical science subjects.

The module studies cell biology, biochemistry and genetics through investigation of cell structure and organelles, enzyme action and metabolism and gene structure, function and expression.

This module aims to examine the structure of the human body, via examining human anatomy, and to look at the way in which the systems of the body function via studying human physiology. It also aims to apply this knowledge to help explain how dysfunction of body systems can lead to disease.

This module will introduce students to basic theoretical and practical concepts in medical and environmental microbiology.

This module will consider the theoretical and practical aspects of sample analysis for disease diagnosis in the clinical biochemistry laboratory within pathology and as a discipline within biomedical science.

This module will cover the theoretical basis of genetic and genomic principles and demonstrate molecular biology techniques in a lab setting.

This module covers the physiology of haematological systems relevant to Biomedical Science, including haematopoiesis, the erythron, blood cell diversity and function, and haemostasis. It also covers the pathophysiology of disorders affecting these systems, including anaemias, haemorrhagic and thrombotic disease, malignancy of blood-forming tissues, and the role of transfusion science in the treatment of such disorders. The investigation of disease includes the theory and principles behind current laboratory tests, interpretation of data and practical laboratory skills. Classroom teaching (lectures, tutorials and workshops) will be balanced with laboratory-based practicals in which students carry out a variety of relevant manual and automated laboratory tests on blood samples.

Develop an understanding of the major concepts of immunology and explore the practical application of immunological principles in disease diagnosis.

This module will consider the theoretical and practical aspects of sample analysis for disease diagnosis in the medical microbiology laboratory within pathology and as a discipline within biomedical science.

This module aims to expand and develop your understanding of the principles and practice of cellular pathology focusing upon a range of pathologies affecting a number of organ systems and the diagnostic strategies and skills used to identify them.

Introduce the application of clinical genetics to disease identification, disease prevention and treatment

This module covers the application of the skills and knowledge attained in 5BM045 to a clinical setting, and covers the pathology, diagnosis and treatment of haematological disorders. Topics will include disorders of all haematological cell systems, coagulopathies, haemoglobinopathies and transfusion practice. A thorough understanding of routine and specialised laboratory tests and interpretation and communication of results will form the basis of the module, leading to a sound understanding of pathophysiology and therapeutics.

The module aims to provide an understanding of the disease mechanisms in immunological diseases and enable appreciation of the application of laboratory investigations in clinical immunology in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease.

Clinically important microorganisms will be studied using a body system based approach. Examples of infectious diseases in the respiratory tract, genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts, skin, blood and central nervous system will be reviewed. Aetiology, pathogenic mechanisms, clinical presentation, and treatment for selected medically important microbial pathogens will be investigated.

This module will look human development and reproduction, in terms of anatomy, physiology, theories underpinning experimental manipulation of embryos, plus reproductive technology and the study of andrology. It will also examine human life cycles, stem cells & regenerative medicine.

You will evaluate and showcase you practical and professional skills by reflecting on your practical and employability skills gained throughout the different modules during your studies. You will complete a portfolio of evidence that can be presented to potential employers as evidence of your experience in the laboratory setting and graduate attributes.

You will undertake a research project, in an area relevant to your discipline, from conception to completion.
