BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance with Foundation Year

This module is designed to give you a basic introduction to cost and management accounting techniques. In this module you will learn different techniques of accounting for costs and how to use this information to analyse different financial situations and produce information that will help decision-making.

This module develops knowledge and understanding of the workings of the market economy, as well as the role of government within the system. The economic environment within which business organisations operate will be explored and those economic factors that influence the behaviour and performance of firms and industries identified. This will include: a microeconomic perspective, which deals with firms, markets and customers; and a macroeconomic perspective, which considers the impact of changes in the national and international economies on business organisations and their stakeholders

This module seeks to develop the conceptual and practical aspects of financial accounting. In this module you will be exposed to the underpinning accounting theory and basic rules of financial accounting, as well as practical methods of book-keeping.

This module provides a transition into your university programme, introducing necessary skills for success in your university studies and knowledge and understanding that will be developed in later modules of your course, and also aims to encourage you at an early stage to take control of your own personal development - both your skills and your future career. Professional people undertake Continuous Professional [Personal] Development (CPD) where they reflect regularly on their strengths and weaknesses and look for opportunities to address their weaker areas and also develop their strengths. This module provides an opportunity to analyse your individual strengths and weaknesses and encourage you to take independent responsibility for your own learning. Also, some key areas of knowledge will be developed, particularly numeracy, Excel spreadsheets and Ethics - all of these areas are vital for accounting and finance and will form vital foundational knowledge for your future studies and to equip you for your future career. The module can be divided into the following themes: - Theme 1: Essential knowledge - maths, Excel Theme 2: Personal development - skills analysis, future career planning, ethical awareness

This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the data handling techniques and methods of statistical analysis using the appropriate software for data collection and analysis. It will enable students to select and apply key quantitative tools to investigating issues in finance area.

The aim of this module is to introduce computerised techniques into financial accounting, in order to prepare students for the digital requirements of real-life accounting. Current and changing technological developments affecting the accounting profession will be discussed. This module builds on the financial accounting knowledge developed at Level 4 and develops skills in using spreadsheets and accounting software.

This module follows on from Financial Accounting Principles at level four, in its focus on financial accounts. The module continues to develop the themes of conceptual and practical aspects of financial accounting, focusing in more detail upon specific, significant accounting rules and regulations. Students will study some key financial accounting standards and concepts learning the different methods of application.

This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the principles of financial economics. This will provide students with the primary theoretical and conceptual frameworks of finance to enable students to study finance at a higher level.

This module seeks to develop the skills and abilities developed in the costing module. Specifically it seeks to analyse and conclude from different financial situations using advanced costing and management techniques. These techniques will include break even analysis, investment appraisal and the incorporation of risk into decision-making.

This module provides a solid framework of the principles of UK taxes affecting individuals – covering income tax and capital gains tax. It also introduces basic tax planning techniques to assist in decision making and strategic planning. In this module you will learn how to calculate individual and sole trader tax liabilities, as well as start to understand some of the principles underpinning tax planning. It is therefore a very practical module designed to give students a working knowledge of UK tax.

The module aims to give a practical insight to the Auditing process followed by auditors and the reporting context. The ethical background and regulatory framework of auditors and the corporate governance requirements for their clients will be considered. The process of evaluating audit risk and the organisation’s internal control system to determine their impact on audit planning will be determined in case study scenarios. Finally, the use of a variety of audit techniques to collect reliable and sufficient audit evidence to support appropriate audit report opinions will be considered.

This module provides a solid framework of the principles of UK taxes affecting companies– covering Corporation Tax, Chargeable gains and VAT. This is an essentially practical module which focuses on the calculation of the tax liabilities generated by corporate decisions and corporate activities as well as introducing basic tax planning techniques to assist in corporate decision making and strategic planning.

This module examines the critical theories and concepts of corporate finance and behavioural finance relevant to the strategic planning and financial positioning of organizations. The module builds on concepts covered in level 5 introductory financial economics module but also introduces behavioural finance, mergers and acquisition and Advanced investment decision making. The construction of efficient portfolios and capital structure is included which necessitate the understanding of efficient sources of and management of finance as well as risk assessment of a wide range of financial assets which ensures that the wealth of organisations are not eroded by poor investment decisions. In addition, this module will embed critical thinking and problem-solving skills and develop analytical skills so that students understand and can use indexes, data and a range of information sources that help form the basis of effective financial decision making.

This module locates management accounting within the wider organisational context. It requires evaluation of the role of management accounting within corporate governance and the strategic decision making processes of an organisation. It requires an evaluation of the role of management accounting within management control systems. It will show how the use of a range of strategic management accounting techniques can enhance the operational and strategic processes within organisations.

This module enables students to investigate an accounting and finance problem through independent study.  The module allows students to integrate different aspects of their previous studies on the course and apply their learning in the discipline by carrying out an independent  review of a closely defined, topical issue.   Students will be able to select a topic of specific interest related to staff interest and expertise.
