Financial analysis and general business awareness are at the heart of this joint degree course. The course is designed to allow students to develop an awareness of modern business practice through practical activities which aim to equip students with a holistic understanding of how an organisation functions, with specific emphasis on accounting and financial record keeping.

A practical and practice-based programme, this course will equip students with the agile, reflexive and critical thinking skills which are vital for success in modern organisations. Emphasis will be given to the rapidly evolving financial landscape post-pandemic through both teaching material and real-world examples.

Through the use of a wide range of concepts, approaches, critical reflection and e-learning forums the course is designed to equip students with a range of personal and intellectual skills in preparation for a career in accounting and general management fields.

You will acquire core financial skills through case studies, online activities and live projects, through interactions with guest speakers from the financial and business world and through reflecting on your own practice.

Specifically, the course will create business managers who have an in-depth knowledge of accounting techniques which should be valuable both in general management and within the financial and accountancy services sector.

The degree can also be used as the basis for postgraduate study in the area of finance and general business management for example the Business School has an MSc Finance & Accounting which dovetails in with the knowledge and skills obtained on this programme.

What happens on the course?

On a sandwich course, your third year will be a supervised placement. This gives you the opportunity to apply and develop the knowledge and skills you have gained in the first two years of your course, before you move on to your final year.

Professional body exemptions - The course provides the opportunity to gain exemptions for Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) which will make you attractive to employers as you will be a significant way towards becoming a fully qualified accountant.

Internships - You can choose to gain valuable work experience through taking an internship (sandwich placement) as part of your programme of study.  Full support in preparing and securing internships is provided through our dedicated support team.  

Study abroad - You can choose to undertake one semester or a full year study abroad at one of our EU partners, as part of your programme of study.  

Working with real managers - We find many opportunities for you to work with practising managers, from company projects, guest lectures and site visits through to short internships or full year long sandwich placements.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Construct, using digital and other methods, a wide range of accounting and financial information useful to the management of organisations.
  2. Critically evaluate financial and non-financial accounting information and use this evaluation to identify a solution, or range of solutions to accounting and financial issues and problems.
  3. Communicate a wide range of financial and non-financial information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audience.
  4. Demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring the exercise of initiative, personal responsibility and decision making.
  5. Develop skills of independent learning, analysis, synthesis and critical thinking through the application of business and management concepts and principles and the related underpinning theories appropriate to a wide range of business organisations and situations.

Typical entry requirement: 96 UCAS points

  • A Levels - grades CCC / BCD
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM
  • BTEC L3 Diploma - grades DD
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 45 credits at merit)

Other Requirements

Students must usually have studied for a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, we will consider applications from mature students who do not have two years of post-16 study, where they have relevant work experience. Please see http://wlv.ac.uk/mature for further information.

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund.

for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
