Adult Nursing
I qualified as an RGN in 1984 working on a general medical ward specialising in gastroenterology. I completed a post registration Nursing diploma (DiPSiN ) after achieving the City and Guilds (730) Teaching Certificate. I attained a BSc (Hons) Education Studies (Nursing) degree while working as a Clinical Teacher in a School of Nursing. I have been employed as a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing (Pre-registration) for over 20 years. I am involved in teaching and assessment across the pre-registration programme. I work with practice partners as part of my University Link role in supporting students on placement. I am currently involved in developing a new and innovative pre-registration Master of Nursing Programme in which we are exploring the possibilities of grading student achievement of clinical practice.
For my MSc dissertation, I carried out a research study entitled ‘Learning to think like a nurse: An exploration into the effectiveness of mind mapping in the development of meaningful learning in Bachelor of Nursing Students’
I have particular interests in curriculum design, adult pedagogy, active learning, enquiry-based learning, e-learning and clinical skills.
- Biomechanics of functional movement and activities of daily living in pathological (e.g. neurological, obese, amputees) and sedentary populations.
- Biomechanically derived exercise interventions.
- Physical activity - monitoring and implications on the mechanics of bone health.
- E-learning in Biomechanics
- Biomechanics of sports techniques (especially football kicking) and application to coaching/training.
