I qualified as a Registered Nurse at Guy’s Hospital, London. I specialised in oncological nursing, working in that field for 17 years at the Royal Marsden Hospitals, London and Sutton, and the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, Canada.

I completed a PhD in 1996 on organ donation and transplantation, as a full-time student supported by a Department of Health Nursing Research Studentship, in the Department of Psychology, at the University of Southampton. This groundbreaking work was the seed corn for a programme of research that gained world recognition and contributed to national and international policy on the care of bereaved families with whom organ donation is discussed.

I was International Chair of the European Platform for Organ Donation and Transplantation (ELPAT) Deceased Donation Working Group 2008-13. I have given oral evidence to the House of Lords Select Committees on: ‘Inquiry into the issues raised by the EU Commission’s communication relating to organ donation and transplantation’, 7 February 2008, and: 'Increasing consent rates for organ donation'22 May 2012.

Since 2010 I have held a joint appointment with the University of Wolverhampton’s Faculty of Education Health and Wellbeing and The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust as Professor in Clinical Practice and Innovation. My remit is to provide research leadership and support and be a role model for healthcare practitioners in the caring sciences, fostering a culture of enquiry and practice innovation, in which people thrive.

Public appointments, community roles and responsibilities

I work closely with national charities and peer support groups for families involved in organ donation and transplantation, and support many of their events and undertakings. I initiated the National Thanksgiving and Transplant Service for families of organ donors, transplant recipients, their families and health professionals involved in transplant activity. The first service was held in Guildford Cathedral, 3 June 2000 as the ‘Millennium Commemorative and Thanksgiving Transplant Service’ with the British Organ Donor Society (BODY), the Chaplaincy of the University of Surrey and invited contributors. My contribution to starting this initiative was acknowledged at the service held in Ripon Cathedral, 2001 and Bristol Cathedral 2002.

I am secretary to a local Wolverhampton Community Group POD (Promoting Organ Donation UK) which meets quarterly to incentivise promotion of organ donation. I am a member of the Organ Donation Group at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. POD also works with the University of Wolverhampton to raise awareness about organ donation within the University of Wolverhampton community.
