    Midwifery

Fiona has been part of the midwifery team since September 2017.  She is a registered, practising midwife, having gained registration and a BSc Midwifery Studies First Class (Hons.) from the University of Wolverhampton in February 2010.

Prior to  her move to Higher Education, Fiona held a number of clinical and midwifery leadership roles, including the provision of antenatal, postnatal and intrapartum care, risk management, practice education and culminating in a midwifery matron role at a local Trust.

Prior to undertaking clinical training, Fiona was an NHS graduate management trainee, subsequently undertaking senior management roles within NHS organisations.  Her dual training provides a sound base for promoting effective clinical management in the provision of safe, quality services. She now uses these experiences in her role as Course Leader for the BMid (Hons.).

Her passion for midwifery and diverse background enables her to teach across a number of modules and levels.  She  is the module leader for a first year Fundamental Care module which introduces new students to the basics of the childbearing continuum and the provision of care throughout all stages of fetal development, birth and early neonatal care.  Her second year double module Developing Care of Mother and Baby enables the structured transition from novice to more critical and independent care givers in more complex clinical situations.  She also contributes to the provision of maternity care training to Paramedic students at the University, recognising the importance of multiprofessional working to support women in the community.

Fiona leads on recruitment and admissions for undergraduate midwifery programmes at the University.

She has completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Education, is a registered teacher with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and holds Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).  She holds a Masters Degree with Distinction in Midwifery Studies.  Her dissertation topic combined her interest and first degree in linguistics, with midwifery care; and considers how the language used by midwives impacts on women's physiological and psychological experience.

Currently supporting joint PPI project between university and local Trust, to introduce student midwives to Patient and Public Involvement in research:  Exercise and nutrition advice for women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.
