Sustainability in construction, construction materials (including recycled), deterioration of historic stone structures, urban pollution, digital image analysis in construction
Dr Searle spent the early part of his career working in the construction industry for Tarmac Construction Ltd working on many of the major civil engineering projects in the 1980’s in the field of materials testing. This was followed by a move to a testing and environmental consultancy, TBV Stangers Ltd where he specialised in contaminated land surveys, noise assessment and concrete structure surveys. In 1994 he undertook a BSc in Environmental Science where he won the Ecology prize for his dissertation ‘Effect of parasitization byScistocephalus solidus on the swimming activity and behaviour of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus L.’ Following straight on from this his industrial experience and academic background made him uniquely suited for his PhD study which looked at how of coal and diesel particulate pollution affects the deterioration of historically and culturally important stone structures. After the successful completion of the study Dr Searle was employed as a Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment (now part of the School of Technology) where he continues to contribute to teaching and research in the Built Environment Section.
