Mental Health Nursing
I have a clinical background in community mental health nursing and have worked across Shropshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands supporting individuals and families experiencing mental health problems. My clinical roles include setting up new services and managing a multi-professional locality team. I have held senior nursing positions within a NHS Trust with direct responsibility for quality standards and medicines management.
In 2004 I moved into Higher Education as a Senior Lecturer, initially at Staffordshire University and latterly at the University of Wolverhampton. This role facilitates opportunities to make a difference to the lives of those experiencing mental ill health by influencing the next generation of our nursing and healthcare workforce. My aim is to ensure that practitioners have the required skills, competencies, attributes and values to effectively respond to meeting the needs of those accessing mental health services, including their family and carers.
Researching the incidence of Secondary Traumatic Stress/Vicarious Trauma in student nurse populations. Also supported (as secondary researcher) the impact of resuscitation events upon student nurses.
All areas of Mental Health and Mental Illness. Specialist interest in psychosis and perinatal mental health including post-partum psychosis. Other areas of expertise include psycho-social interventions; medication management; family and carer involvement – including Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT); and secondary traumatic stress.
