Please note this webpage was originally for Professor Geoff Layer and hasn't been updated to reflect any pay information for Prof Ian Campbell, the interim VC.
The Vice-Chancellor’s pay is reviewed each year in relation to University performance.
The salaries of senior staff are set by the University’s Remuneration Committee, which is an independent Governor-led committee.
When considering any increase in salary, or indeed that of any member of the senior team, the Committee takes into account:
- The performance of the University overall against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) agreed by the Board of Governors
- The comparability of the current package to peers both within the sector and appropriate benchmarks external to the sector
- Pay and bonus principles and practice across the University.
The Vice-Chancellor has never been a member of the committee but may attend parts of the committee meetings simply to discuss the remuneration of the 120 senior staff at the institution. He is not present or involved in any way in the discussions related to his own remuneration.
Details of the Vice-Chancellor’s pay package are made publically available every year on the University’s website as part of the end of year financial accounts.
However, we have now endeavoured to lay out details of the VC’s pay and expenses in the interests of more transparency and openness. The following information is therefore being published on a voluntary basis in order to provide details of the costs incurred by the Vice-Chancellor relating to travel, accommodation, subsistence and hospitality while undertaking University duties.
The Vice-Chancellor’s expenses reflect the commitments of the head of a global University and include international travel.
Dr Simon Walford, Chairman of the University of Wolverhampton’s Board of Governors said: “We are a large institution and the remuneration package of our Vice-Chancellor reflects the size, complexity and performance of this University.
“Professor Geoff Layer has been with us since 2011 and in that time he has met challenging targets and helped the University increase student numbers, increase satisfaction and boost the employability of our students to record levels.
“He has led the University from the front including the task of generating £250m of investment to enhance facilities, courses, training and staff development.
“Under his leadership the University has become a key player in economic regeneration and the skills agenda in the region and positioned itself to raise both the aspiration and attainment of communities we serve.
“We launched a new strategic plan in 2016 which will take the University forwards to 2021 under Professor’s Layer’s leadership.”
Notes
Travel
The figures for 2015-16 and 2016-17 include air and rail travel. The Vice-Chancellor flies Economy Class on short-haul flights within Europe and Business Class on long-haul flights, based on scheduling of work. The figures for 2017-18 and 2018-19 also include travel by taxi.
The Vice-Chancellor travels by train wherever possible, in the interests of sustainability and cost effectiveness. In circumstances where the VC is travelling under strict time constraints, is attending numerous business engagements in multiple locations and/or is travelling very late at night or early in the morning, he travels by car.
Accommodation
The accommodation figures below refer specifically and exclusively to hotel accommodation booked for the Vice-Chancellor when it has been required due to attendance at business meetings, conferences and other events. The venue booked is the most efficient option for the VC to meet scheduled commitments and fulfil business engagements.
Subsistence
This includes subsistence costs incurred while undertaking University duties only.
Hospitality
This includes hospitality expenses incurred by the Vice-Chancellor for meetings directly associated with University business.
