Unique opportunity for deaf students

20/03/2008
Around 60 deaf students from the UK, USA, Japan, China, the Philippines and Russia are set to take part in the 2008 Summer Leadership Institute.

The four students are Louise Buglass, 20, from West Bromwich, (studying BA Deaf Studies and Law), 23-year-old Brian Duffy from Edinburgh (BA Film Production), David Hay, 22, from Wolverhampton, (BA Property Asset Management) and 20-year-old Rebecca Thomas from Birmingham (BA Deaf Studies and Law).

The event is run by PEN-International, the worldwide partnership of colleges and universities, and is a unique international week-long programme for deaf students in Higher Education.

The Institute will take place from August 9-16 2008 at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex.

Alistair Wright, Manager of the Communications Support Unit at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “Our aspiration is to empower deaf young people to go and lead when they graduate from here. We hope that the week-long programme will inspire our students."

The event aims to develop leadership skills, encourage learning about Deaf culture and awareness and promote advocacy skills in the areas of general access, support services and employment.
