The Dennis Turner Hardship Fund can be accessed* confidentially by any students, home or international, who are struggling to make ends meet. The fund is not classed as public money and does not affect the visa status of international students. These hardship funds are non-repayable, and can provide a short-term solution to students in this position. Processing timescales can be from 2 to 4 working weeks, rising to 8 working weeks depending on volume of applications**.
The Dennis Turner Hardship Fund (DTHF) opens towards the end of October each year and closes for standard applications in April. Should any students need support from us between April and July we may still be able to offer support for exceptional circumstances.
*Apprenticeship students, those studying stand-alone modules, distance learners (as stated in the actual course title including online only courses) and TNE (International students who are studying in their home country) are not eligible
** These processing times are also dependant upon correct completion of form and provision of all relevant evidence.
Please note that it clearly shows a confirmation message upon submission and will send you a confirmation email to your university email address.
For a more in depth explanation of the evidence you may need to supply, including tips on how to do this, please see our What evidence is required? page.
Please note - hardship funds cannot be used to pay tuition fees.
See the Hardship Fund FAQs below for more information about how to apply.
Hardship Fund FAQs
All current (i.e. enrolled) students, home and international, including those studying at partner institutions are eligible to apply for the hardship fund.
UK/Home Students can apply to the Hardship Fund if you:
- have taken up and are in receipt of all statutory support that is available i.e. Maintenance Loan/Tuition Fee Loan/NHS Bursary
- Postgraduate students must have paid, or made arrangements to pay, their tuition fees and basic living costs.
International and EU Students
You should have made provisions to pay your tuition fees and cover basic living costs before you commenced your studies if it is a condition of your visa.
You can apply to the Hardship Fund if you have had a significant change in circumstances since enrolling on the course, and are struggling to cope financially. Applying for the Hardship Fund does not affect your visa status.
We would also recommend that you seek advice from our UKVI Visa team (visa-enquiries@wlv.ac.uk) if your change in circumstances is affecting your ability to study – for example if you have your IT facilities blocked or if you are unable to complete your enrolment when required. If your circumstances have changed it may affect your visa, so it’s best to discuss this as soon as possible.
Who is not eligible?
- Unfortunately, the fund is for current students only and cannot support students who are pre-entry, those on apprenticeships, distance learning, TNE courses, or stand-alone modules.
- University funding and bursaries cannot help towards your tuition fees.
With regards to any issues you may have paying your tuition fees you need to contact our Finance either via phone (01902 321256) or email incomesection@wlv.ac.uk (including your student number) as they may be able to negotiate a payment plan as, unfortunately, the hardship fund cannot help with this.
The hardship fund opens towards the end of October each year and closes for standard applications in April, or until the funds are depleted, whichever is the sooner. Should any students need support from us between April and July we may still be able to offer support for exceptional circumstances.
The fund completely closes for a maximum of a week at the end of July each year for financial end of year.
The Specific Bursaries (DSA and SpLD Assessment support) remain open all year but may be subject to update and/or change in criteria between academic years (September to July).
When the fund is open, you can request to apply via e:Vision.
- Click on the My Finance button on your Homepage

If you have any issues with this, please email us at money@wlv.ac.uk with your student number and a brief description of your issue and we will try our best to get this sorted.
Please make sure you have all relevant evidence saved and ready to upload in the correct format (pdf) before you apply. You will not be able to complete the application without it.
You can leave the application at any time, and it will temporarily keep your information to continue later.
For a more in depth explanation of the evidence you may need to supply, including tips on how to do this, please see our What evidence is required? page.
