University to sponsor Deaffest

02/03/2017

The University of Wolverhampton is delighted to be the main sponsor of Deaffest 2017, the UK’s leading Deaf-led film and arts festival.

The University is a long-standing supporter of Deaffest, which will take place in Wolverhampton from 12-14 May 2017.

Deaffest supports and develops the talents of emerging and established deaf filmmakers and artists from the UK and around the world. The annual festival showcases films and documentaries by international filmmakers. Exhibitions, seminars, workshops, parties and networking take place at the festival and everyone is welcome to take part, sharing their interest in films and the arts.

Deaffest is organised by Zebra Access, a charity dedicated to ensuring that all deaf people both adults and children enjoy equal participation and access without communication barriers.

Dean of Students, Jon Elsmore, said: “Deaffest is always a vibrant and exciting event in the city calendar and we are delighted to be closely involved once again.

“Our staff and students play a major role in the growing success of Deaffest. Students from our BA (Hons) Interpreting (British Sign Language/English) course act as interpreting support at the event, and our enthusiastic Deaf students are always keen to be involved.

“The University was delighted to be recognised for our outstanding support for students through communication professionals such as interpreters when we were recently shortlisted for the Signature Annual Award for Educational Support 2017.”

Nikki Stratton, Co-founder of Deaffest, said: “We are delighted to have the University of Wolverhampton as our main sponsor once again. The University’s support for Deaf students through communication professionals truly deserves recognition.  Without their outstanding work many former Deaf graduates would not be where they are today. Deaffest is going from strength to strength and we look forward to having you on board.”

Deaffest, the Deaf Film and Television Festival, was launched in 2006 by Zebra Uno, Light House and the University of Wolverhampton. It was launched with a purpose to provide deaf filmmakers with an opportunity to be recognised for their talents, to show their work and be supported in achieving their aspirations.

This year’s 12th Deaffest will feature the biennial Film Awards Gala with film screenings from around the world together with a packed programme featuring events and workshops.
