25/04/2017

A University of Wolverhampton graduate has been selected to exhibit her work at a prestigious art event in London.

Naomi Jacques, 33 from Staffordshire, has been selected by New Designers (ND) to exhibit in the ‘One Year On’ section of their annual event held in Islington London at the end of the June.

The event showcases over 3,000 of the most promising graduate talents from Britain’s leading design courses. The show features everything from illustration to animation, furniture to fashion, and gaming to glass and takes place at the Business Design Centre in London.

Naomi graduated from the Wolverhampton School of Art in 2016 with an Applied Arts honours degree and creates glass sculptures.  She works from home where she has a kiln and her own working studio space.

She said: “I am really excited to have been chosen to exhibit at this year’s show. I was a little surprised to have been selected. I am aiming to attract Galleries, Private Collectors and Commissions on a national and international level - all of which I attracted last year when I went to exhibit with the University as a graduate.”

“Applied Arts is a truly inspiring course to help you peruse various paths of creativity. The University of Wolverhampton has wonderful facilities across many mediums and all the up to date technologies (as well as traditional processes) available for you to explore. The teaching and technical staff are brilliant. The modules given allow you to direct your learning towards your chosen career path, making the degree geared around your specific needs.”

The University has offered Naomi some workshop space as well as support for printing materials and helping out with transport to ND.

Dr John Pymm, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University, said:  “We are delighted that Naomi is successfully pursuing a career as an artist.  Graduate success is testimony to the dedication and experience of staff in the School of Art who combine teaching expertise with links to creative business professionals in order to equip students with skills that enable them to embark on careers in the industry.”

As well as being selected for ND One Year On, Naomi was recently commended by the Contemporary Glass Society in the Graduate Review 2016 and is a Licentiate Member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. She has been invited to exhibit her work at the next Designer Crafts Exhibition held by the Society of Designer Craftsmen in London 2017.
