STUDENT SUCCESS: SARAH PLATTS, FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

An ambitious mum who was awarded a highly coveted scholarship is ready to take her next steps to the Bar after achieving a first class degree.
Sarah Platts has been awarded the Queen Mother’s Scholarship after impressing an interview panel of judges made up of senior members of the legal profession.
The scholarship provides financial assistance for students who want to study for the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and is only given to a few outstanding candidates nationally each year.
The 30-year-old is graduating this week with a first class Law LLB Hons from the University’s Faculty of Social Sciences.
Sarah, from Shrewsbury, chose to study at the University of Wolverhampton because of the warm atmosphere and support, which she felt was important as she had to juggle the demands of studying with being a mother.
She says: “I knew from the open day that the staff would be supportive and encouraging. This was important to me because at the time my daughter was a baby who had spent a long stint in hospital and needed a lot of care and support from me. The University was not put off by my situation; instead it was made clear all they could do to help me. This is why I chose Wolverhampton.”
Sarah was impressed by the support she received during her law studies, as she had a number of challenges to overcome.
“During my studies I had to care for my daughter who was in and out of hospital, as she suffers from a milk protein allergy from all types of milk including breast milk. There were occasions when she would need to attend hospital for treatment.
“Also when I started at Wolverhampton I was diagnosed with Dyspraxia after attending an assessment funded by the University. Overall the diagnosis helped me as I was able to learn study strategies and learning methods, but it was a huge learning curve to get to grips with having a disability.”
Sarah says achieved her first class degree was one of the proudest days of her life.
She adds: “I would say that I owe the University and my lecturers a huge debt for all of the support they have given me. I do not believe that if I had studied anywhere else I would have achieved a First or the Queen Mother Award. Overall it was a great experience and I could not recommend the University highly enough.”
Sarah will use the scholarship to pay the £16,000 fees for her Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), which she will study next year at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her ambition is to become a Barrister within Civil Law.
