University race team in the driving seat for F3 Cup second place

11/10/2016

The University of Wolverhampton Race Team (UWR) has clinched second place in this year’s national F3 Cup Championship title – marginally missing out on a first place spot by 1 point!

As the only University competing against 17 other teams in this season’s MSV F3 Cup, the Race Team had lead the grid after competing over the past few months at premier national venues including Brands Hatch, Silverstone, Donington Park and Oulton Park with the final race taking place last weekend at Snetterton 300 circuit.

An investment of £12 million in the University’s engineering facilities at its Telford Innovation Campus in Priorslee is currently underway, creating world class education facilities for engineering students including industry standard design, development and testing facilities as well as Motorsport workshops which are home to the single seater race cars (Formula 3, Formula Renault and Formula Student) and also the Morgan Plus 4 Babydoll which the team has run in the AR Morgan Challenge.

David Tucker, Principal Lecturer in Motorsport at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “Staff and students have worked really hard and shown great commitment and dedication in what’s turned out to be an amazing F3 debut season.

“We have committed sponsors on board, students have their own car to work on and they are gaining hands-on experience and practical engineering knowledge with opportunities to compete in national competitions like the F3 Cup, the Morgan Challenge & the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Formula Student competition.

“A massive investment has gone into our campus facilities providing a really attractive course offering for students who want to study engineering.”

Simon Davey, F3 Cup Co-ordinator, said: “A special mention must go to the University of Wolverhampton Race Team. The student-run team has never failed to provide driver Shane Kelly with an exceptionally prepared car, their distinctive Dallara F308 featuring prominently in the podium spots throughout their first year of running such technical machinery. While it hasn't all been plain sailing, the team's resilience and focus is a credit to them - and perfectly embodies the spirit of F3 Cup.”
