University captures an audience in Latvia for its use of technology

A delegation of staff from the University of Wolverhampton recently visited Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) in Latvia to share their expertise on the use of capture technology.
The Panopto system uses technology such as video feeds, audio, Powerpoint slides and screen capture to enhance learning and teaching, making it easy for staff to record, edit and share video materials with colleagues and students.
The University has signed a five year agreement with the capture technology provider and staff were invited to RSU after presenting at the Panopto User Conference in London in 2015 following a successful two year pilot project.
Gemma Witton, E-Learing Advisor in the College of Learning and Teaching (CoLT) at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “RSU is a university of Health and Human Sciences, so the benefit of our collective extensive experience in Panopto was very well received by the delegates.
“The use of capture technology in teaching means that staff can capture lectures and lessons and offer students the flexibility of being able to revisit learning materials when revising. It also offers real added value to the learning experience, especially if students are studying online or on a distance learning course.
“Our project team will now be working to equip learning spaces with capture technologies and provide more staff development on using the system to further enhance our teaching and learning methods. CoLT will also be conducting further educational research on the benefits of capture technology on the student experience with collaborators from across the University.”
As well as presenting on Panopto at RSU, the University visiting party also had a tour of the facilities of the Medical Education Technology Centre and were invited to participate in some simulated patient scenarios.
The group had excellent feedback from RSU staff and plans are in place for colleagues from RSU to visit the University of Wolverhampton to see first-hand its innovation with capture technologies in science and health subjects.
University staff in attendance were Matthew Green, Assistant Director (Academic and Learning Support), Directorate of Academic Support, Dr Phil Gravestock. Dean of CoLT, Dr Martin Khechara, Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science (Microbiology), Faculty of Science and Engineering and James Pearson-Jenkins, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing.
