Hi-tech labs revolutionise science education at University

Students are benefiting from a flexible and innovative approach to lectures within the pioneering hi-tech labs at the University of Wolverhampton’s new £22 million Rosalind Franklin Science Centre. 

The University has worked with Dell to provide Dell Venue 11 Pro tablets to those using the lab, becoming one of the first universities in the UK to be using high numbers of tablets in a science environment. 

Lecture Capture technology enables academics to be live streamed so even if a student is not physically in the room, they can watch a lecture live, with multi camera angles. It has already captured 100 hours of lecture footage, with more than 1,000 hours of viewing time by students.

An intuitive electronic lab notebook is also available. The web-based alternative to traditional paper versions is designed with science in mind and allows for annotations and sharing of notes.

In addition, procurement of the industry’s most technically advanced LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) from LabWare is progressing.  Customers of this solution are typically blue chip clients in the Pharmaceutical, Bio-Chemical, Oil & Gas industries.

University IT Consultant Matthew Flower said: “The technology in the Rosalind Franklin Centre really is cutting edge and making a significant difference to how students learn and work.

“The Rosalind Franklin Science Centre now has the first big implementation of tablets for students across the University. In addition, the innovative way the labs are set up allows flexibility and features
‌movable equipment; unlike traditional labs, it can be easily changed for different lectures and scenarios.”
