University to celebrate arts and culture at House of Lords

The University of Wolverhampton is to celebrate the arts and creative industries at a prestigious event at the House of Lords.

The reception, hosted by the University’s Chancellor The Rt Hon. Lord Paul of Marylebone PC, will showcase the institution’s artistic heritage and its contribution to the industry.‌

Guests will include dignitaries and guests from international embassies, the Mayor and Deputy Mayors of Wolverhampton, Telford and Wrekin and Walsall and honorary graduates, along with figures from the West Midlands and national arts and cultural scene, businesses, partners, staff, students and governors.

The reception, taking place tomorrow evening (Tuesday April 28 2015), will also preview plans for the launch of the University’s Wolverhampton School of Art, which was first established in 1851.

Pride of place at the reception will be a range of glassware commissioned by the University to mark the event and created by third year Applied Arts student Tim Boswell.

Lord Paul said: “I am delighted to be able to host this wonderful occasion at such a historic and prestigious location.

“We are coming together to celebrate the great diversity and heritage that we have at the University of Wolverhampton in arts and culture and the contribution it makes to our communities.”

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “The University has a fantastic heritage and its developing roots came out of the foundation of a School of Art over a century and a half ago.

“Ever since then we’ve providing people with the opportunity to help shape the arts and cultural world and that can be witnessed first-hand by the successes and impact of our graduates.

“Not only does the University contribute to the cultural economy of the region; it also greatly supports the actual economy through the creative industries.”
