Talented artist to feature in national exhibition

Artist Jonathan Meira, from Retford in Nottinghamshire, is the first student from Wolverhampton to have been selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries, the leading UK graduate exhibition.

Jonathan graduated this month (September) with a first class honours in Fine Art, and was also awarded the Sandvik Prize for excellence in Sculpture.

The exhibition will feature work by 55 graduates from art schools from across the UK.

The 22-year-old said: “Studying the BA in Fine Art gave me the time and the space needed to develop my practice. I feel honoured to be a part of this year’s Bloomberg New Contemporaries Exhibition and look forward to the experiences and opportunities it will provide me with in the future.”

Maggie Ayliffe, Fine Art Course Leader, added: “Bloomberg New Contemporaries is an important showcase of emerging talent from British Art Schools – it is a great opportunity for Jonathan and a real coup for the Fine Art course at Wolverhampton. I have felt for a number of years that our best graduates are every bit as good as the top students coming out of London, Glasgow, Norwich, Newcastle and Manchester art schools and it is really exciting to see us finally on the Bloomberg map.”

The launch of Bloomberg New Contemporaries will take place at World Museum, Liverpool as part of Liverpool Biennial, from 20 September to 26 October 2014 before touring to the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London, from 26 November 2014 to 25 January 2015.

New Contemporaries is the leading UK organisation supporting emergent art practice from British art schools.

Since 1949 New Contemporaries has consistently provided a critical platform for new and recent fine art graduates primarily by means of an annual, nationally touring exhibition.
