Students vie for international game development crown

The team, made up of current students and recent graduates, are one of just fifteen groups selected by a panel of industry experts for the final of the “Dare to be Digital” competition held at the University of Abertay Dundee.

The nine week long contest is designed for University students and recent graduates, and sees teams working together to develop a functional prototype video game.

At the end of the contest the three highest scoring teams are awarded £2500 and go on to compete for the coveted BAFTA "Ones to Watch" award.

For the competition the University of Wolverhampton is being represented by “Team Paper Planes”, a group comprised of recent graduates and undergraduates who are currently studying BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Games Development) at the University.

“Team Paper Planes” includes Jane Barrie, Oliver Morgan, Connor Walker, Paul Mceneaney, and Josh Depoiy. Their concept is ‘Milkshake Rush’, a strategy game where players get the chance to own a small milkshake café before expanding their business.

Dr Thomas Hartley, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and academic mentor for the team at the University, said: “Team Paper Planes are a great group of students. They are great programmers and have previously worked together on a game for a module here at the University.

“Encouraging student groups to enter competitions is just one example of how the Computer Science Department supports our students and helps them to take advantage of opportunities, as well as assisting them in developing their innovative ideas.

“Milkshake Rush is shaping up to be a fantastic game and I can’t wait to play it.”
