Experience the magic of science and engineering

‌Scifest, which was launched last year, is holding a huge free event on Saturday 22 June 2013 at the University’s City Campus, Wulfruna Street from 10 – 4pm.

There will be a wide variety of exciting workshops, amazing science shows and incredible science fun-fair stalls, for all the family to enjoy. The activities are completely free and suitable for children from the age of 5-16 years.

Dr Derek Walton, Associate Dean of the School of Applied Sciences, said: “After last year’s success we are so excited about the Saturday Scifest event. We have a huge programme of free interactive workshops, shows and activities that will amaze children and adults.

The objective of Scifest is to bring science and technology to life and provide interesting and fun experiments for people to witness and interact with. We hope visitors will enjoy what’s on offer and learn something new.”

The new additions for this year include TV’s most extreme scientist Dr Bunhead who presents the marvels and mechanics of volcanoes. The Doctor will reveal his most spectacular and outrageous experiments ever, in his quest to create a volcano live on stage. Warning this show contains some unexpected loud bangs and small amounts of smoke!

There is a demonstration which combines sport and adventure with science and revealing what science we can learn from extreme sports and big expeditions. Extreme presenter, Huw has presented on TV shows, radio and lives on three continents and promises an enthralling experience for all adrenalin junkies.

For animal lovers there is the opportunity to encounter a wide selection of animals including reptiles and mammals. As well as speak to Animal Man who will answer questions about all creatures, great and small.

Space enthusiasts will relish the rare opportunity to hold a moon rock in their hand and take a closer look at a meteorite which has fallen from space. Samples of moon rock and soil brought back to Earth by NASA's will be on show and a geologist, who will be on hand to answer any questions.

Other activities include robot wars, meccano challenges, discovering the magic behind illusions, solving crimes, building rockets, gliders, drum machines and racing cars, which will inspire and excite the entire family.

There is also a Fairground side stalls, with a healthy twist of fun. Win prizes galore on the Hook a Bug, Brain in the Bucket, Healthy Tin Can Alley & Play Your Cards Right challenges (Cholesterol version). Impress friends on the Strength Tester, before deciding if Beer Goggles really do make a difference to vision!

The event is supported by The Black Country Museum, Thinktank and Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Some shows and activities have limited capacity and seats will need to be booked in advance. So do book via the website to avoid disappointment.
