New arts project launched to celebrate black community

Art and poetry to celebrate inspirational black achievers who have become iconic in their field is to be showcased at the University of Wolverhampton.

‘Get on the Bus’ is a new arts project organised by a group of graduates and students from the BA Fine Art course as part of Black History Month.

The exhibition includes works inspired by Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt and the achievements of Wole Soyinka, the first African to win The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. There is also documentary-style poetry which reflects on the 19 years of struggle for justice following the death of Stephen Lawrence.

The arts project will be on display in the Long Gallery in the School of Art & Design (MK Building) from Monday, October 1 to Tuesday, October 30 2012. It is open from 10am – 5pm.

Su Fahy, Divisional Leader in Fine Art and Photography from the School of Art & Design, said: “‘Get on the Bus’ is an arts based project which highlights the positive contributions of black, inspirational, high achievers who have become iconic emblems in their respective fields and beyond.

“It presents a diverse selection of works, exploring the achievements of black ethnic minority groups and individuals.”

Get on the Bus is organised by M-Culture Art UK, a collective of graduates and students on the BA Fine Art course at the University of Wolverhampton. This group launched in 2010 while discussing black history, art theory and philosophy in lectures. M-Culture Art UK formed a manifesto to represent the positive contributions of the black community to society.

The artists involved in the project are D Roger Baker, Charles Egornu and Riccardo de Bruce, who are all passionate about visual art.
