Academic answers weird and wonderful questions about human emotion

24/10/2012

A sports psychologist from the University of Wolverhampton has provided answers to unusual questions about human emotions in a new book featuring leading experts from across the UK.

Each chapter in the offbeat book, which is titled Should I Strap A Battery To My Head? (And Other Questions About Emotion) poses a different question about emotion which is then answered using the latest scientific evidence.

Professor Andy Lane, from the University’s School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure, has contributed to four chapters, including one entitled ‘Can I run myself happy?’

Other chapters featuring Professor Lane and PhD student Andrew Friesen focus on weird and wonderful questions such as is anger an energy and can you really ‘fake it until you make it’?

All proceeds from the book will go to a mental health charity to fund further research on emotion. The book, which is edited by Professor Peter Totterdell, of the University of Sheffield’s Department of Psychology and Dr Karen Niven of Manchester Business School, was officially launched in Sheffield last week.

All of the authors who contributed to the book were members or associates of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project Emotion Regulation of Others and Self (EROS).
