Top prizes for science students

Three students won prizes for the work they presented at the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Congress in Birmingham.

The three-day event included lectures, an exhibition and masterclasses for students, academics and professionals working in biomedical sciences.

The School of Applied Sciences students presented projects and posters detailing their research within a range of pathology disciplines.

The three winners were Govinder Shergil, who won the prize for the best short paper presentation in the Immunology Section; Vinodh Kannappan, winner of the best short paper presentation prize in the Cytopathology section and Baljit Saul, who received the prize for the best poster in the Microbiology Section.

Sara Smith, Senior Lecturer in the Biomedical Science and Physiology Department, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our students’ success at this prestigious event. The IBMS Congress is an excellent opportunity for them to gain real experience of a scientific conference, and we are pleased to have had so many students presenting their projects and winning prizes for their work.”

A further four students presented their work at the Congress. They were Jessica Patel, who presented a poster in the Cytopathology section; Patience Magocha presented a short paper presentation in the Cytopathology section; Kenpreet Koasha showcased a poster in the Virology section and Dr James Vickers, who showcased a student project in the Haematology section. In addition, Dr Jan Martin presented a poster detailing the experiences of local pathology laboratory training officers involved in an exchange visit to Malta.

The IBMS is the professional body for biomedical scientists in the UK. It aims to promote and develop the role of biomedical science within healthcare to deliver the best possible service for patient care and safety.
